A birth certificate or marriage certificate rarely just sits in a drawer. You need it precisely when an institution abroad – or a Bulgarian institution dealing with a document from abroad – asks to see it in official form: when you marry overseas, have a marriage recognised, apply for citizenship, claim child benefit or settle an inheritance. For a number of EU countries you need neither a translation nor an apostille. A multilingual extract from the civil-status record, which the municipality issues under the Vienna Convention (CIEC), is enough – foreign institutions accept it directly, in their own language. This does not apply everywhere, though. When legalisation is needed after all, the procedure for Bulgarian civil-status documents is usually this: an apostille is placed on the certificate by the relevant Regional Administration, and then we produce the official translation by a sworn translator into the language of the receiving country.
