Birth and marriage certificate translation and legalisation

Civil-status certificates ready to use abroad or here in Bulgaria. We take care of the apostille and the official translation by a sworn translator, so you don't have to do the rounds of the institutions yourself.

A birth certificate or marriage certificate rarely just sits in a drawer. You need it precisely when an institution abroad – or a Bulgarian institution dealing with a document from abroad – asks to see it in official form: when you marry overseas, have a marriage recognised, apply for citizenship, claim child benefit or settle an inheritance. At Maxima Life in Varna we have worked with these civil-status documents since 2004, and we handle the paperwork for you.

Which documents we handle

  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage certificate
  • Certificate of marital status
  • Certificate of heirs
  • Certificate of family relationships and other civil-status documents issued by the municipality

Multilingual extracts

For a number of EU countries you need neither a translation nor an apostille. A multilingual extract from the civil-status record, which the municipality issues under the Vienna Convention (CIEC), is enough – foreign institutions accept it directly, in their own language. This does not apply everywhere, though. Tell us which country you will use the document in and we will judge whether the extract will do, or whether a translation with an apostille is the safer option.

Legalisation and apostille

When legalisation is needed after all, the procedure for Bulgarian civil-status documents is usually this: an apostille is placed on the certificate by the relevant Regional Administration, and then we produce the official translation by a sworn translator into the language of the receiving country.

Exactly what is required depends on the document and the country – in some places an additional certification is also requested. That is why we advise you free of charge before we start. We have set out the details of the procedure itself on our legalisation and apostille page, and translations are carried out by sworn translators.

When you will need it

  • Getting married abroad – a birth certificate and a certificate of marital status are almost always required.
  • Recognition of a marriage or birth that took place abroad before the Bulgarian institutions (or the other way around).
  • Applying for citizenship or residence status.
  • Child benefit and social payments in another country.
  • Inheritance matters – proving kinship or marital status.

Turnaround and price

The turnaround time and the price come down to the document, the language and whether an apostille is required. Tell us what you have and where you are sending it, and we will come back to you with a specific quote, not vague promises. Indicative rates are also on the prices page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a translation if I have a multilingual extract?

For a number of EU countries the multilingual extract issued under the Vienna Convention (CIEC) is accepted without a translation and without an apostille. For other countries a translation is still required. Tell us which country you will use the document in and we will advise you whether this applies to your case.

Who places the apostille on the certificate?

The apostille on civil-status certificates issued by Bulgarian municipalities is placed by the relevant Regional Administration. After that, we prepare the official translation by a sworn translator.

Do I need the original?

To obtain an apostille you usually need a freshly issued original certificate from the municipality. The exact requirement depends on the document and the country – we advise you free of charge before we begin.
